Accessibility
Designed for everyone, including users with disabilities.
JISSR is built first and foremost for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community. Accessibility is not a bonus feature - it is the entire point. We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA.
Features for accessibility
- High-contrast mode and dark/light themes, switchable from settings.
- Adjustable text size across the interface.
- Keyboard navigation for all interactive controls.
- ARIA labels and role attributes for screen-reader compatibility.
- Visual cues for audio events (recording status, playback) - no critical information is conveyed by sound alone.
- Haptic feedback on supported mobile devices for action confirmation.
- Captions and text output for every spoken translation.
Known limitations
As an academic prototype, some areas still need work:
- Translation accuracy varies with lighting, signing speed, and camera angle.
- The avatar dictionary is limited to a starter vocabulary of common signs.
- Some animations and modals could better support reduced-motion preferences.
Report an accessibility barrier
If something stops you from using JISSR, please tell us - we take accessibility reports as a priority. Email mr.yousufalshaaili@gmail.com with what happened and the device/browser you used. We try to respond within a few working days.
